The Manager’s Challenge

Infinitive MindLife - For Managers - Manager's Challenge

Managers have always needed to master the ability to zoom in and zoom out, relate the big picture to day-to-day activities, and decide at each step where to direct their attention and precious time wisely. Managers must lead people, inspire and motivate. They are responsible for the success of teams and groups.

And yet, being a manager today can be very different to even a decade or two ago: technology, new forms of organizational structure and collaboration, employee cultural diversity and the ever-changing dynamics of globalization and the global enterprise – all of these present new challenges to managerial leadership.

Add to this the increase in the number of careers & roles we now pursue over a lifetime, a new demand for work-life balance, the ongoing search for meaning and contentment ….and it’s clear why managers, no matter how successful, occasionally require guidance, advice and a helping hand.

My Approach to Facilitating Managerial Success

Infinitive MindLife - For Managers - Facilitating Managerial Success

Success in a leadership role is an outcome influenced by and dependent on many variables. I respect the complex nature and diversity of managerial challenges – both from an organizational, performance-focused point of view, as well as from an individual human perspective. Disregarding the complex nature of role and person often leads to common deficits such as poor performance and misalignment.

Usually I start with a comprehensive, interview-like conversation about the manager’s situation, challenges, goals, preferences, work-relationships, and the like. Depending on client wishes, I may also speak to the manager’s superiors, team, colleagues, HR manager or anyone else relevant to the initiative.

I then propose a specific intervention or program, in a written proposal, that captures the situation, goals and desired outcomes, tools and methodologies, benefits of the proposed approach, and a timeline. The approach may include the widely used MBTI framework, executive coaching, or a combination of those and other frameworks. My interventions can be one-on-one or team-based.

All initiatives are outcome-focused, use a custom-approach that best meets the client’s needs, and respect each individual’s integrity, uniqueness and aspirations.

Who can initiate a leadership development initiative

Typically I get asked to help managers and executives in one of the following scenarios:

  • A manager’s senior, or often the HR department, invites me to propose a development intervention
  • A manager may ask for assistance with role-specific challenges
  • A manager may ask me to work with the team he or she manages
  • An individual in a managerial or leadership role may work with me privately and confidentially, without involvement of their employer
